I am always so pleased to find new research into this little gem of a berry. It really is a maq-nificent berry.
Recent research has shown Maqui Berry extract may inhibit growth of fungal infections Candida albicans.
"Based on clinical issues with current antifungal drugs and the emerging need for new approaches to effectively eradicate C. albicans infections, particularly oral candidiasis, as well as the growing demand for natural antifungal products, we evaluated the standardised extract from the fruits of Aristotelia chilensis for its anti-Candida potential and safety profile. This study demonstrated for the first time that Maqui Berry extract possesses potent anti-virulence activity that can attentuate the pathogenicity of C. albicans strains with different filamentation phenotypes, acting as multiple nutritive conditions to which the fungus may face during colonisation of the human body. In combindation with nystatin, Maqui Berry extract had synergistic antifungal activity, but no toxicity in vivo. These promising results warrant further studies to investigate the efficacy of Maqui Berry extract in antifungal treatment or prophylaxis."
